Coaching Through Leadership: How Managers Create Better Employee Outcomes

Leaders who Coach

Many organisations expect managers to coach their employees, yet relatively little is known about what makes these coaching relationships effective. Drawing on findings from four studies, this presentation explores the factors that contribute to successful manager-led coaching and the employee outcomes that follow.

Jesse will present evidence showing that supervisor-employee coaching relationships are dynamic and can strengthen or weaken over time. His research demonstrates that improvements in the quality of these relationships are associated with higher job satisfaction and lower intentions to leave the organisation. The presentation will also examine the important role HR can play in creating the conditions for effective managerial coaching through formal training, protected coaching time, and ongoing support for coaching capability.

Attendees will gain practical, evidence-based insights into how organisations can help managers become more effective coaches and build coaching relationships that deliver lasting benefits for employees and organisations alike.

Our Speaker

Jesse Mowat is a PhD candidate in Human Resource Management at Massey University, where he researches employee coaching, supervisor capability, and leadership development. His doctoral research examines the factors that enable managers to be effective coaches, and he has published four studies investigating the critical success factors associated with managerial coaching.

Jesse held several leadership roles that involved developing, guiding, and supporting frontline staff. These experiences sparked his interest in workplace coaching, leadership effectiveness, and the organisational conditions that help managers build strong developmental relationships.

Drawing on both practical leadership experience and rigorous academic research, Jesse's work focuses on how organisations can equip managers to build stronger coaching relationships that enhance employee engagement, job satisfaction, development, and retention.
