Online Workshop: 2 half-days 15 & 22 April 2024, 9.00am - 1.00pm presented by Fiona Howard

This event will be recorded for those who are registered but can't make it on the day. However, this is an interactive workshop and you should aim to attend the live session.

For many of us, maintaining a fresh and challenging approach in our supervision practice and keeping skills such as facilitating reflection at the heart of supervision remains elusive. Effective supervision includes working through the supervisee’s agenda whilst remaining alert to emerging themes. Collaboratively navigating the territory within a session or casting a light onto new areas for the supervisee’s consideration takes careful consideration. Such dilemmas are the ‘frequently asked questions’ of experienced supervisors returning for further training.

This one-day refresher training builds on your existing supervisory skills by re-visiting and extending some key models and principles of effective supervision practice. We will further explore reflective practice in supervision, consider what helps create the optimal conditions, and look at crafting questions to help supervisees reflect more deeply or critically on their work. We will also explore how to respond to the different needs of supervisees, choose helpful areas of focus and ways of working that best fit the scenario. In addition, some useful supervision tools from experts in the field such as Daphne Hewson and Michael Carroll will be presented to add to your repertoire of approaches. Finally, there will be opportunity to review your own supervision practice and consider what the next steps are for you in your supervisory development.

This course is suitable for those who have completed an introductory course in supervision at some stage prior, and have subsequent experience providing supervision no matter how long or short that is. There will be a mixture of teaching, reflection, and practice with peers, so you will have the opportunity to learn from each other and develop solutions to your challenges. Come with your own learning needs identified and be prepared for a practice-oriented workshop.
