Awhi Warrior Workshop
This one-day in-person professional development workshop is facilitated by The Awhi Warrior authors, Lisa Cherrington (Clinical Psychologist/ Mataora) and Sarika Rona (Educational Psychologist).
Centred around a bilingual children’s book about a Nanny who helps her moko, Teina, reconnect to te tai ao (environment) and rediscover the power of the atua to nurture and help them care for each other through tough times, the Awhi Warrior workshop is interactive, reflective and practical.

The workshop will provide professionals working with tamariki and whānau an opportunity to dive into the book content as both a reader, listener and facilitator/ therapist. Utilising mātauranga Māori, pūrākau (narratives), and practical exercises, participants will gain insights for their own wellbeing and gain confidence and tools to support tamariki and whānau to navigate their emotions and build connections.
Each participant will receive a copy of The Awhi Warrior book as a resource to support their mahi with whānau and children.
Workshop Structure:
The day is divided into three wāhanga (sessions), reflecting key elements of connection:
· Whakapapa (Strength in Connection)
· Manawaroa (Inner Strength)
· Awhi Mai Awhi Atu (Support in Action)
Who Should Attend?
This workshop is designed for both Māori and non-Māori professionals working with tamariki and whānau, including:
Social Workers; Educators & Kaiako; Psychologists; Counsellors & Mental Health Practitioners; Community & Youth Workers.
You do not need to be fluent in te reo Māori to attend this workshop. However, you will need a strategy to look up the meaning of kupu hou (new words) that you may not understand (e.g. using online Te Aka Māori Dictionary)
