A fresh look at old knowledge.
We can thank Ta Mason Durie for his contribution to Māori health with Te Whare Tapa Wha. Whist he drew on the metaphor of the four walls of the house, it’s perhaps not quite as our tīpuna (ancestors) viewed the relationship between these aspects of wellbeing.
Let’s take a dive into a different and expanded way of thinking about Te Whare Tapa Wha and the wisdom contained within te reo Māori itself that gives clues to what they are, what they do and how they’re connected.
Koia te whakapapa o te mana Motuhake– Nā Tipene Pickett
10 April 2026 – 8am to 12pm
How did our tīpuna view the origins and development of the Hinengaro?
What differentiated us as human beings from all of the other children of Tane such as the birds, and animals?
Then last time we met we dipped our feet into the pool of understanding of what the Hinengaro is, what it does and how it’s related to the other aspects of our being.
We’re now about to dive headfirst and with eagerness into the pool of understanding of the Hinengaro. Our understanding will deepen as we explore the 23 gifts of Rua-i-te-Pūpuke for the Hinengaro of Hine-ahu-one.
To make sense of this indigenous knowledge and give it some space to settle and find its place in your understanding we’ll spend time thinking and talking about each of the gifts and its implications for health and wellbeing.
